History of Rotterdam The Hague Airport
Rotterdam had its own airport since 1920: Waalhaven Airport. Waalhaven was a civil airport with regular services to London and Paris. The aircraft factory of Koolhoven was also located here. On May 10, 1940, Waalhaven Airport was largely destroyed during the German attack on Rotterdam. After the bombing the Allies destroyed the airfield completely to make it unusable for the Germans. Waalhaven was not rebuilt after the war.
At the instigation of the port operators in 1956, Rotterdam opened a new airport at the Zestienhoven location that could also fulfill a function for the Hague region. The runway was 1300 meters long. In 1966 the runway was extended. The current airport building was built in 1967. source Wikipedia
